Frequently Asked Questions
How long has your school been around?
Based in Minneapolis-St. Paul, the Steve Carroll Goalie School was established in 1995. Our school continues to grow in popularity. Hundreds of goalies from Minnesota, twelve other states and Canada have chosen our program to assist
in the development of their goaltending skills.
What is the goal of your program?
Our innovative program was developed to provide goalies with the much-needed attention and position-specific coaching they truly deserve but rarely get.
Our school is specially designed so athletes who have chosen to play this important position receive the personalized attention and state-of-the-art instruction they need to help maximize development. Our school helps goalies
of all levels improve their fundamental skills and boost their confidence in a challenging and enthusiastic environment.
How many ice hours in each session?
A typical session consists of six hours of ice time conveniently scheduled in the evening and on weekends. Advanced sessions feature sevens hours of on-ice training during the evening and on weekends. Parents are welcome to stay and observe the training sessions.
Can you describe a typical on-ice training session?
A typical on-ice session begins with goalie-specific skating and movement drills. Goalies are then divided into smaller groups to focus on specific skills such as gloves/leg pad saves, angles, rebound control, breakaways, footwork and body control.
How many goalie coaches are on the ice?
Depending on class size, we usually have three to four coaches on the ice with the goalies. We also may use junior instructors. Our coaches do an excellent job of explaining, demonstrating and reinforcing the latest goaltending
techniques used by today’s successful goalies.
How many pucks will my child see during the session?
It's difficult to predict how many shots your child will face during a typical training session. However, we do know your child will have the opportunity to stop plenty of pucks throughout each session. We also believe it’s very important to work on a variety of other aspects of becoming a successful goaltender.
Does your staff meet with the goalie parents?
Yes, there is a short introductory meeting for parents and the goalies prior to start of the first ice hour. Coaches also are available to answer questions throughout the weekend.
Does your school provide any goalie equipment?
Goalies are responsible for providing all of their own equipment. Often times, your hockey association has equipment available for summer or fall programs. Goalies are required to wear the proper equipment as required by USA Hockey.
